Soul Jazz Records Ignites Colombian Soundscape with ‘Latin Fire!’ Cumbia, Salsa & Afro-Funk Compilation

Elena MorenoElena MorenoSeptember 19, 2025 1892 Minutes read0

London-based Soul Jazz Records is set to release a vibrant new compilation, ‘Latin Fire! Cumbia-Salsa-Afro-Funk Colombia 1956-83’, offering a deep dive into the rich musical heritage of Colombia through the extensive archives of the legendary Discos Fuentes label. This carefully curated album celebrates the “golden era” of Colombian music, spanning nearly three decades of groundbreaking tropical dance sounds.

The Enduring Power of Discos Fuentes

Founded in 1934 by Antonio Fuentes Estrada in Cartagena, Discos Fuentes stands as a titan in Latin American music history. Often dubbed “the Motown of Colombia,” the label was instrumental in pioneering and popularizing a vast array of Afro-Latin genres, including cumbia, salsa, porro, fandango, and Afro-funk, both within Colombia and on the global stage. Discos Fuentes not only recorded these sounds but actively sought out local talent from remote corners of the country, giving visibility to musical styles that were often overlooked. The label’s innovative spirit is further evidenced by its history of firsts, including producing Colombia’s first compilation album and being among the first to release music on CD.

A Musical Tapestry of ‘Latin Fire!’

‘Latin Fire!’ meticulously traces the evolution of Colombian popular music from the late 1950s through the early 1980s, a period marked by immense creativity and fusion. The release begins by exploring the foundational rhythms of cumbia from the 1950s and 1960s, before transitioning into the emergence of heavyweight, hardcore salsa and raw Afro-funk that defined the 1970s and early 1980s. This collection showcases how Discos Fuentes’ tropical sound masterfully blended indigenous Colombian traditions with influences from New York’s barrio-style Latin scene, as well as Caribbean styles like soca and zouk, forging a uniquely danceable and infectious sound.

Featuring Colombian Music Icons

The compilation shines a spotlight on some of Colombia’s most iconic artists and ensembles whose careers were shaped by Discos Fuentes. Featured prominently are Fruko (including his work with Fruko y Sus Tesos), The Latin Brothers, Michi Sarmiento (and his various ensembles), Afrosound, Pedro Laza (and Pedro Laza y Sus Pelayeros), and Wganda Kenya. These artists represent the diverse styles and innovative spirit that made the Discos Fuentes catalogue so influential and enduring. Tracks like Fruko y Sus Tesos’ “El Vidriero,” The Latin Brothers’ “Duelo De Picoteros,” and Wganda Kenya’s “Shakalaode” exemplify the pulsating energy and infectious rhythms that characterize this era of Colombian music.

Preserving a Vibrant Legacy

This new album release serves as a vital testament to the enduring power and global influence of Colombian tropical music. By delving into the vast vaults of Discos Fuentes, Soul Jazz Records is not only reintroducing these classic tracks to a new generation of listeners but also preserving a crucial part of the continent’s musical heritage. ‘Latin Fire!’ is an essential collection for anyone seeking to explore the dynamic sounds and rich history that emerged from one of Latin America’s most important record labels.

The album is scheduled for release on September 12, 2025.
