NPR’s ‘El Tiny’ Series Returns for its 5th Year, Celebrating Latin Music’s Diverse Legacy with Icons and New Voices

Javier GutierrezJavier GutierrezSeptember 15, 2025 1782 Minutes read0

NPR Music has once again ushered in Latin Music Month with the highly anticipated return of its fifth annual ‘El Tiny’ concert series. This acclaimed takeover of the iconic Tiny Desk platform, running from September 15 to October 15, promises a rich tapestry of sounds and performances, deliberately designed to bridge generational divides and showcase the expansive breadth of the Latin music industry.

A Milestone Celebration for Alt.Latino

At the heart of this year’s ‘El Tiny’ festivities is a significant milestone: the 15th anniversary of NPR’s pioneering radio show and podcast, Alt.Latino. For over a decade and a half, Alt.Latino, co-created and hosted by Félix Contreras and now co-hosted by Anamaria Sayre, has served as a crucial conduit for Latin music and culture, introducing listeners to a vast array of artists beyond the mainstream. The ‘El Tiny’ series, born from this dedication, represents the culmination of their efforts to bring these diverse voices to a wider audience through the globally recognized Tiny Desk format. This synergy between Alt.Latino and Tiny Desk has cemented its role in the Latin music landscape, offering a platform that respects both heritage and innovation.

Bridging Generations: A Stellar Lineup

The 2025 ‘El Tiny’ lineup exemplifies its mission to connect legendary figures with emerging talent. Headlining this year’s series are titans such as Argentine rock pioneer Fito Páez, Colombian superstar Carlos Vives, and the incomparable Gloria Estefan, bringing their decades of experience and global acclaim to the intimate Tiny Desk setting. These established artists share the stage with a dynamic roster of rising stars and boundary-pushing musicians, including Luiza Brina from Brazil, Lido Pimienta from Colombia, and Mexico’s Silvana Estrada, among others. The curated selection spans genres from rock and cumbia to electronic and traditional folk, reflecting the multifaceted nature of Latin music.

The Vision Behind ‘El Tiny’

Co-curators Félix Contreras and Anamaria Sayre have consistently championed a vision for ‘El Tiny’ that celebrates authenticity and artistic evolution. Sayre, recognized on Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list for her work, and Contreras, a veteran voice in Latin music journalism, meticulously select artists who push creative boundaries and represent a spectrum of experiences within the Latinx community. Their approach ensures that ‘El Tiny’ goes beyond mere musical performance; it offers insights into the artists’ cultural roots, personal journeys, and the creative processes that shape their unique sounds. This commitment to depth has made ‘El Tiny’ a cornerstone event for both artists and fans alike, fostering a sense of discovery and connection.

Impact on the Latin Music Industry

The ‘El Tiny’ series has become a significant force in elevating Latin music and its artists on a global scale. By providing a platform with millions of views on YouTube, these performances offer invaluable exposure, often serving as a springboard for artists seeking to expand their reach within the music industry. The series not only highlights established legends but also introduces audiences to the next generation of Latin music innovators, contributing to the genre’s ongoing growth and diversification. This annual event underscores NPR’s commitment to showcasing the richness and global influence of Latin sounds, affirming its pivotal role in the contemporary music news cycle.

As ‘El Tiny’ continues its annual tradition, it remains a vital celebration of Latin music’s past, present, and future, reinforcing its position as a cultural touchstone for artists and music lovers worldwide.
