Bad Bunny Stars in ‘Porto Rico’: A Caribbean Western Exploring Controversial Puerto Rican History with A-List Cast

Bad Bunny Porto Rico Film Set to Ignite Conversations on History with Bad Bunny in Lead Role

The highly anticipated film, “Porto Rico,” starring Bad Bunny, is set to ignite conversations about history. This project marks Bad Bunny’s first leading acting role in the epic Caribbean western and historical drama. René Pérez Joglar, known as Residente, directs the film, which is Residente’s feature directorial debut. The film aims to explore a debated chapter of Puerto Rican history, bringing the story of Bad Bunny Porto Rico to the forefront.

A Star-Studded Ensemble Cast for Bad Bunny Porto Rico

The film boasts an impressive cast. Viggo Mortensen, Javier Bardem, and Edward Norton are also set to star in “Porto Rico.” Alejandro G. Iñárritu is serving as an executive producer. Edward Norton mentioned the film’s potential. He believes this Bad Bunny Porto Rico film can offer a powerful take on the island’s history. He also stated it could force audiences to face “the shadow story under the American narrative of idealism”. Norton added that Residente and Bad Bunny together are like “a flame finding the stick of dynamite”.

Roots in Puerto Rican History: The Story of Bad Bunny Porto Rico

“Porto Rico” centers on José Maldonado Román. He was a 19th-century revolutionary, also known as “Águila Blanca,” or White Eagle. He fought against colonial rule on the island, representing opposition to colonization and trying to protect Puerto Rico‘s identity. The film seeks to revisit this significant Puerto Rican history. Residente has long dreamed of making a film about his country, stating it is a reaffirmation of identity. The film blends historical scope with a visceral approach, promising a gripping narrative inspired by true events. The title “Porto Rico” itself hints at history, referencing the anglicized spelling used under U.S. rule from 1900 to 1932. This choice signals the film’s focus on identity and memory within the context of Bad Bunny Porto Rico.

Bad Bunny’s Momentum and Connection to Bad Bunny Porto Rico

Bad Bunny enters this project with significant career momentum. He recently won Album of the Year at the 2026 Grammy Awards. His album “Debí Tirar Más Fotos” made history as the first Spanish-language album to win this top prize. He also headlined the Super Bowl LX halftime show on February 8, 2026. This performance was a celebration of Puerto Rican culture, with Bad Bunny being the first solo Latino artist to headline the show. The performance drew over 128 million viewers domestically and marked the first halftime set performed almost entirely in Spanish. Furthermore, he released his signature Adidas sneaker, the BadBo 1.0, in February 2026. This collaboration highlights his influence in fashion. Bad Bunny’s connection to Puerto Rico is deep, and director Residente chose him for his profound feeling for the island, making him the perfect lead for Bad Bunny Porto Rico.

Production and Vision for the Bad Bunny Porto Rico Film

The film project has been in development since 2023. Residente co-wrote the script with Alexander Dinelaris, the “Birdman” screenwriter. Live Nation Studios is backing the production. Edward Norton is also producing through Class 5 Films. The team aims to tell the true stories of Puerto Rico’s roots with intensity and honesty. This major film project promises to blend cinematic ambition with a deep cultural narrative, undoubtedly offering compelling stories for audiences worldwide. Integrating latin music top stories, this Bad Bunny Porto Rico venture is poised for success.
