Ricky Martin Set to Make History with Inaugural Latin Icon Award at 2025 MTV VMAs, Promises Electrifying Performance

New York, NY – Global music superstar Ricky Martin is poised to etch his name further into the annals of music history, as MTV announced he will be the recipient of the first-ever Latin Icon Award at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards. The highly anticipated ceremony, scheduled for Sunday, September 7th, will broadcast live from New York’s UBS Arena, simultaneously airing on MTV, CBS, and streaming on Paramount+. Martin is also confirmed to deliver an electrifying performance, marking his return to the VMA stage 26 years after his groundbreaking appearance in 1999.

A Legacy of Global Influence and Latin Music’s Ascent

The introduction of the Latin Icon Award is a significant recognition by MTV of the immense impact Latin artists have had on global music and culture. And who better to inaugurate this prestigious honor than Ricky Martin, a true trailblazer whose career spans four decades and is widely credited with igniting the “Latin explosion” of the late 1990s.

Born Enrique Martín Morales in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Martin began his musical journey as a child actor before joining the iconic Puerto Rican boy band Menudo. His solo career, launched in 1991, quickly gained traction in Latin America. It was his 1999 self-titled English album and its chart-topping lead single, “Livin’ la Vida Loca,” that catapulted him to international superstardom, firmly cementing latin music‘s place in the mainstream American pop landscape. This pivotal moment paved the way for numerous Latin artists to achieve global success, forever changing the sound of popular music. Martin’s musical versatility, seamlessly blending Latin pop, dance, reggaeton, and salsa, has been a hallmark of his enduring appeal.

MTV’s Growing Recognition of Latin Talent

MTV’s decision to establish the Latin Icon Award underscores the network’s deepening commitment to celebrating the contributions of Latin artists. While previous major honors have been bestowed upon global icons—notably Shakira, who received the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award in 2023—this new category specifically carves out a dedicated space for those who have profoundly shaped Latin music and culture on a global scale. The award acknowledges not just commercial success, but the deep cultural resonance and influence that transcends borders.

Martin’s impact is undeniable, with over 70 million albums sold worldwide and more than 180 awards recognizing his extensive work in music, acting, and humanitarian efforts. His celebrated career includes multiple Grammy and Latin Grammy wins, along with five MTV Video Music Awards, among many others.

A Historic Return to the VMA Stage

Martin’s performance at the 2025 VMAs holds particular symbolic weight. It marks 26 years since his unforgettable 1999 VMA appearance, where he delivered a show-stopping performance and made history as the first male Latin artist to win Best Pop Video, ultimately taking home five Moon Persons that night. That groundbreaking moment was a testament to his burgeoning global appeal and the increasing influence of Latin rhythms on a worldwide audience. Now, more than two decades later, his return to the VMA stage as the inaugural Latin Icon Award recipient is a full-circle moment, celebrating a career that has consistently pushed boundaries.

Alongside Martin, the 2025 VMAs will feature a stellar lineup of performers, including Sabrina Carpenter, Busta Rhymes (who will receive the first-ever MTV VMA Rock the Bells Visionary Award), J Balvin featuring DJ Snake, Alex Warren, and Sombr. The event, hosted by LL Cool J, promises to be one of the year’s top stories in entertainment, filled with memorable performances and significant recognitions.

A Continuing Cultural Force

Ricky Martin’s enduring presence in the music industry, coupled with his tireless humanitarian work and advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights, solidifies his status as more than just a pop star; he is a global icon and a force for positive change. This inaugural Latin Icon Award not only honors his past achievements but also celebrates his ongoing relevance and inspiration to new generations of artists and fans worldwide. His journey continues to be a compelling narrative of artistic evolution, cultural impact, and global recognition, making this VMA honor a truly fitting tribute.
