Pelikula Spanish Film Festival Returns to Makati, Uniting Cultures Through Cinema

Makati, Philippines – The vibrant tapestry of Spanish-language cinema returns to the heart of Makati as the PELÍCULA>PELIKULA Spanish Film Festival unveils its 24th edition. From October 10 to 16, 2025, film enthusiasts will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a rich selection of over 20 acclaimed films from Spain, Latin America, and the Philippines, presented across the iconic Ayala Triangle Gardens and the Power Plant Mall.

This highly anticipated annual event, established in 2002 by Instituto Cervantes de Manila, has solidified its position as a premier showcase for Spanish-language cinema in Southeast Asia. Its enduring mission is to foster deeper cultural understanding and strengthen the enduring ties between the Philippines and the Spanish-speaking world.

A Cinematic Journey Begins: “El 47” Takes Center Stage

The festival’s opening night on October 10 at Ayala Triangle Gardens will mark the premiere of “El 47.” This Spanish historical drama, directed by Marcel Barrena, has garnered significant critical acclaim, including five Goya Awards. The film tells the compelling true story of Manolo Vital, a bus driver in 1970s Barcelona who, incensed by the neglect of immigrant communities in his neighborhood, commandeers a bus from the number 47 line to protest and demonstrate the feasibility of public transport access. “El 47” is lauded for its portrayal of community perseverance, civil disobedience, and the fight for basic rights, embodying a universal tale of human spirit and resilience.

A Diverse Palette of Stories from Across Continents

This year’s festival promises a rich cinematic feast, spanning a wide array of genres and narrative styles. Audiences can anticipate engaging dramas such as “Soy Nevenka” and “Nosotros,” alongside insightful documentaries like “Un hombre libre” and “La guitarra flamenca de Yerai Cortés.” The lineup also features captivating animations, including “Mariposas negras” and “Robotia.”

Spotlight on Latin American Cinema

A significant component of PELÍCULA’s programming is its dedication to showcasing the dynamism of latin American cinema. This edition will feature a compelling selection of films that highlight the diverse cultures and storytelling traditions of the region. Among the featured films are the Argentine rural thriller “Por tu bien,” the Brazilian family drama “Até que a música pare” (which translates to “Until the music stops”), the Uruguayan entry “Becho,” and the Peruvian coming-of-age story “Reinas.” These selections offer a glimpse into the contemporary cinematic landscape of Latin America, celebrating its unique voices and perspectives.

Filipino Voices Take the Stage

In a testament to the festival’s commitment to local talent, the “En corto” program will shine a spotlight on short films from the Philippines, alongside those from Latin America and Spain. Scheduled for October 16, this segment will present recent works by emerging Filipino filmmakers, including “Lip Sync Assassin” by Jon Galvez, “Animal Lovers” by Aedrian Araojo, and “Radikals” by Arvin Belarmino. Directors will be present to introduce their films, fostering a direct connection between creators and the audience.

More Than Just Screenings: Engagement and Celebration

Beyond the captivating film screenings, PELÍCULA continues its tradition of audience engagement. Festival-goers will have the chance to vote for their favorite film through the Audience Choice Award, a cherished tradition since 2004. The winning film will be announced on the closing day, October 16, and will receive a special encore screening.

Special events include the “Cine Maratón” on October 11 at Ayala Triangle Gardens, offering a full day of back-to-back movie screenings from 11:45 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Films such as “Dalia y el libro rojo,” “Tasio,” “Solos en la noche,” and “Reinas” are set to be featured. Additionally, Instituto Cervantes will host children’s activities and workshops, aiming to spark creativity and imagination among younger audiences. A special event on October 12 before the screening of “Robotia” will offer children a chance to win Real Madrid merchandise.

All screenings are free of charge and will be presented in their original languages with English subtitles, ensuring accessibility for a broad audience. This initiative by Instituto Cervantes de Manila, in collaboration with various embassies, cultural institutions, and academic partners, underscores the festival’s role not just as a cinematic event but as a platform for cultural exchange and dialogue.

The PELÍCULA>PELIKULA Spanish Film Festival stands as a beacon of cultural diplomacy, offering a compelling platform for shared narratives and artistic expression. As this latest news unfolds, the festival invites everyone to experience the power of cinema in bridging worlds and celebrating diverse stories.
